Name: Shuntaro Chishiya
Canon: Alice in Borderland (Netflix Series)
Canon point: End of episode 2.07
Age: unspecified but probably mid-20s (the actor is 25, so I figure the character is around the same)
History: Wiki Link
Personality:
+CLEVER+ Some people are lovers and some people are fighters, but Chishiya is neither. He’s a thinker. He learns quickly and, having been through medical school, is highly educated. He's also perceptive and strategic and he’s ready and willing to use all of that to his advantage. In the games of Borderland he excels at Diamond themed games, which are games that require intellect and reasoning to win. Even in other types of games, he tends to stand back, watch and think before making his move. Outside of the games he uses his intelligence, as well, as he works in his own way to solve the mystery of what’s going on in Borderland.
-CONDESCENDING- The problem is, Chishiya knows he’s smart. He knows it and is confident in it and with that confidence comes arrogance and condescension. In Borderland, where many people run on pure emotion, Chishiya is used to being the smartest person in the room, and he will act like it. It may be insufferable, but it doesn’t always read as actively malicious. Sometimes it’s just him acting like he knows a secret (which he might) or is in on a joke others aren’t privy to. However, he will also never hesitate to sass people he thinks are being stupid.
+UNFLAPPABLE+ The absolute epitome of calm, cool and collected, it’s doubtful that Chishiya is capable of actually panicking. Even in tense, life-threatening situations he keeps a level head. He has a machine gun pointed directly in his face? He doesn’t flinch. Being shot at with an anti-tank rifle? Pauses to make some commentary before fleeing at a light jog. Loses his partner in a deadly game? Still finds a way to survive and win. Literally gets shot? Appears mildly inconvenienced and sasses the person who shot him. He just does not get freaked out.
-JADED- While his ability to remain calm under pressure is definitely a boon, his reasons for it are more of a problem. Chishiya is deeply jaded. As a medical student/junior doctor he was exposed to hospital corruption and asked by his superiors to lie about it. After seeing children’s lives be bought and sold, and being told that this is just how things are, that it’s part of the job, he pretty much gave up on life, humanity and, ultimately, himself. The rich and powerful win and the poor and underprivileged suffer and die, so honestly what’s the point of anything? In the first season, especially, his attitude borders on nihilism. It’s actually one thing we see undermine his intelligence, because he tends to assume the worst of people. By the end of the second season he has started to question his more nihilistic tendencies, but is still very aware of just how ugly the world can be.
+ADAPTABLE+ On top of everything else, Chishiya is highly adaptable. While he certainly likes to strategize and be prepared, that actually can only take a person so far in Borderland where people don’t know what exactly they’ll need to do before the death games start. Chishiya proves that he is quite capable of thinking on his feet and adapting to circumstances as they happen. When he loses his partner in the Jack of Hearts game he remains calm and switches strategies in order to continue on and survive. Even outside of the games he is resourceful, creating his own weapons out of odds and ends he finds. He makes a flamethrower out of a watergun, a lighter and some duct tape and uses it to defeat a guy with an sniper rifle. He has a legitimate talent for figuring out how to adapt and survive.
-MANIPULATIVE- Unfortunately, one of the ways Chishiya adapts is through manipulation. This manifests in a couple of ways. He can be strategic and Machiavellian about it, which we see when he sets Arisu up to take the fall so that he and Kuina can steal the playing cards and escape the Beach. He doesn’t mean this as a personal slight, he simply thought it was necessary to ensure the success of his scheme. The other way it manifests is through little mind games. Chishiya is the Borderland’s equivalent of the Cheshire Cat and as such he is a bit of a troll. He will mess with people to see how they react and use that to his advantage. This is more or less how he survives both the games we see him play in season two. If he can’t scheme his way through the chaos, he will become the chaos.
Powers/Abilities: He is a normal human with no super powers, but his mundane skills and abilities include:
- Highly intelligent and perceptive
- Medical training and experience
- Surgical training and experience
- Skilled at reasoning and strategy
- Some weapons knowledge, likely self taught
- Experienced with jerryrigging weaponry
- Survival knowledge, learned through experience
Regret: Not pushing back more against hospital corruption and letting himself be part of the problem.
Suitability: There are a few things that could make him a suitable candidate. Perhaps most obviously his intelligence, adaptability and gift for staying calm are all things that could be useful on missions. He’s perceptive and analytical which will be good for gathering information and piecing things together, and the fact that he seems to thrive in the face of chaos means he will potentially be at his best when missions go sideways. He does have a selfish streak, but he can actually be a very good team player when it’s useful and/or if he’s working with people he likes. He even has experience working with a larger community to collect valuable items. His abilities as a doctor and a surgeon could also be useful when and if he decides to reveal them.
Also, from a psychological standpoint, he is at the perfect point to be recruited for something like this. He is, for the first time, allowing himself to feel things like regret and wanting to change. He’s basically fruit ripe for the picking.
Inventory:
- the clothes on his back which are mostly ruined now
- one of the little bombs he made
