From AiB episode 2.07
The memory opens with Chishiya wandering through the streets of an abandoned, derelict Tokyo. The buildings have fallen into disrepair, becoming overgrown within plant life, vines creeping up even the tallest, most modern skyscrapers. The streets are filled with abandoned, rusted cars and the occasional stray skeleton. It looks positively post-apocalyptic.
In the distance Chishya sees a tall man with a shotgun flung over his shoulder. Chishiya recognizes him and calls out to him. They chat for awhile, Chishiya commenting that there are only two games left and the remaining players are gathering in Shibuya. He’s not surprised to see this man is still alive.
The taller man says Chishiya has change, mellowed out a lot. Chishiya chuckles and admits he’s been through a lot. He asks the man—Arisu-kun, he calls him—if he can tell him something he’s never told anyone before. Arisu agrees, but before Chishiya can say anything a single shot rings out.
Chishiya is hit in the lower left side and goes down immediately, stunned for a moment.
“Yo!” a voice calls from behind Arisu, “It makes me pretty damn happy to run into you here!” The man who’s approaching them is clearly suffering from severe injuries, disfigured from third degree burns all over his body, his movements seem hindered slightly, as if moving through pain.
“Niragi…”Arisu says, shocked and wary.
Chishiya pushes himself up on one elbow, looking strangely exasperated “Did you mean to miss a vital organ?” he calls out, sarcastic and unbothered even while he’s bleeding on the ground.
“I wasn’t going to end this with a surprise attack,” Niragi explains as he moves closer, his gun still raised, “Okay, let’s begin. A shootout game. Now that the three of us are back together, that seems most suitable.”
“A game between players?” Chishiya asks, a little incredulous.
“The three of us are very similar,” Niragi tells them, “We’re oddballs who can fit in to society. We’re scum. But even so, our need to feel alive is greater than other people’s.”
His little speech is cut off as he violently coughs up some blood. “I haven’t got much time left,” he says then by way of explanation, “so let’s do this. As kindred spirits, join me in one final game!” He pulls out a second gun and tosses it in Chishya’s direction.
Slowly, Chishiya pushes himself back up to standing, keeping his left hand pressed to his side. He moves to retrieve the gun. “Interesting,” he says as he straightens, “Join us, Arisu-kun.”
“Chishiya?” Arisu asks, incredulous. He might be rethinking what he said about Chishiya mellowing out.
“I’m sure you despise me, as well,” Chishiya tells him, as if this is totally reasonable and not remotely unhinged, “Use this opportunity to take revenge. Let’s play a game between the three of us.”
“Are you insane?” Arisu demands, clearly stressed.
“Come on,” Niragi calls, running out of patience, “You’ve got a gun, too. Take aim!”
And with that Niragi takes a shot at Arisu who ducks for cover as Chishya fires two shots at Niragi, who moves out of the way to climb on top of an abandoned car. He can be pretty agile in spite of his obvious injuries. Once he’s on top of the car he fires two shots at Chishiya who scrambles to take cover behind another nearby car. Hindered slightly by his injury, Chishiya loses his footing and stumbles into the side of the scar, grunting softly in pain as he jars the wound in his side. Still he manages to pull open the door to give himself some extra coverage.
“Niragi! Stop this!” Arisu calls from his hiding spot. Another car, not far from Chishiya.
“I’m simply doing what I want the way I want,” Niragi shouts, pointing his gun back and forth between both Chishiya and Arisu, “You guys are the same way! It’s always “me!” with you two! You aren’t experts on life just because you saw a bunch of people die! “Living for others?” That’s such bullshit. All we really care about is our own selves! As long it’s good for us, that’s all we need!”
There’s a pause before Arisu finally responds, “Yeah. You may be right. Killing each other here just might be appropriate for us.”
“At last, you get the picture,” Niragi says, sounding pleased.
“Niragi, what you say makes the most sense,” Arisu concedes, still ducked behind the car, gripping his shotgun tightly, “You could almost convince me! But I don’t…ever want to go back to the weak person I was.”
Chishiya still ducked behind the car, is quiet, but listening, clearly affected by what Arisu is saying.
Arisu stands, slowly lowering his shot gun as he turns to Niragi, “I won’t do this. I won’t pull this trigger just to help myself.”
Chishiya, likewise, slowly loosens the grip on his handgun, relaxing his arms, his expression clearly pensive and regretful.
Niragi lowers his gun, annoyed, “Well that sure puts a damper on things,” he mutters.
For a moment things almost seem settle, but a new voice, feminine calls out from nearby, “Arisu?” a woman in sporty clothing a short chin length bob approaches the field, and all three men turn their attention to her. Chishiya looks concerned about this development, Niragi seems irritated.
“What are you doing?” the woman asks softly, perplexed.
“Oh, yeah,” Niragi mutters resentfully, “There was you, too.” And then he starts shooting at her.
“Usagi!” Arisu yells, finally aiming his shotgun directly at Niragi, “Stop it! Usagi has no part in this!”
Niragi turns his gun back on Arisu. “Every game needs a heroine to make it exciting!” he calls mockingly.
“This is insane!” Arisu shouts, distressed.
Chishiya still says nothing, looking thoughtful as he keeps his gaze on Usagi, who’s crouching nearby. He’s weighing his options, considering solutions.
“If you’re dead,” Niragi says to Usagi, “we can be kindred spirits again. I can’t stand to be alone anymore.”
He aims and takes another shot at her just as Chishiya puts himself between Niragi and Usagi, taking another bullet in his upper right chest. In the same moment Arisu shoots Niragi with his shotgun, hitting him square in the torso and knocking him off the top of the car.
A moment later, as Usagi looks up to find out why she’s not been shot, Chishiya collapses. “Chishya!” she yells shocked as she runs to him.
Arisu whips around, stunned, and runs to join them “Chishiya!”
“Chishiya, why did you do that?” Usagi asks as she puts pressure on his wound, “Why did you protect me?”
Chishiya takes a moment to respond, struggling a little to breathe. “I wanted to do something a little out of character,” he explains softly as he opens his eyes to look at them, “It’s probably because of the people I met here. Like Kuzuryu and Arisu-kun.”
And with this the memory starts to fade.
